In schooling, should students be grouped homogeneously (same personality, backgrounds, skills) or heterogeneously (different personalities, abilities, cultures)? Why?

I believe that students should be grouped heterogeneously. There needs to be a mixture of students because each student has different strengths. In order for a class to work well together there needs to be different sorts of people in the class. If there are different types of people in a class, there is more to learn from each other.



How large a part does personality play in who you are? Explain.

I think personality plays a large part in who you are. Your personality is you. It is what makes you different or similar to people. Personality is what attracts people to you and it is the reason you have the friends you have.

How can you relate Tom Joad to the preacher?

Tom Joad and the preacher shared something in common. They had both lost touch with their religion and God. They found it hard to believe in something that had never proved itself to them. They also came to terms with things that happened in their lives and had no regrets with what they had done. They never looked back and if they had to relive their lives, they would do it all over again. They were two very closely related characters.

How does Tom Joad represent all inmates after their release?

Tom Joad was arrested for homicide. After getting into a fight, he was stabbed, and as a form of self-defense, killed the man. He was sentenced to seven years in prison but was let out in four for good behavior. He was let out back into the world. He needed to find a job and home. After living off the government, he needed to work.

After living in prison for four years, Tom Joad had to return to a family and a life outside of prison walls. Like many other inmates, Joad might have found it hard to adjust. Prison is a much different living condition than the average home.

Imagine being fed, clothed, and sheltered, then you were thrust into the real world and had to work for this. Tom Joad needed to find work to be able to survive. He could not live without some sort of job to support himself.

Joad did not own a home to go to when he was released. He needed to live with his father. Many inmates move in with their family because they usually do not have their own home.

Inmates slip back into society, and become members of a working society. They rebuild their lives, starting at the very basics. They need to find a home and job. All ex-inmates blend back in with society.

What does the trucker represent in the Grapes of Wrath?


The road was all he knew, yet when he met Tom Joad, he was completely different. He pried into Tom Joad’s life, trying to find out every single thing about him. He was sneaky and manipulative. You can almost compare him to the paparazzi and media of today.

Tom Joad only asked for a ride, not an opportunity to tell his life story. The trucker was manipulative to get the answers he wanted. He knew exactly what to ask.

Although the trucker was usually lonely, he still did gossip. This would have been a story to tell anyone he met, of Tom Joad, the murderer he drove.

The trucker needed a story of about someone else’s life to keep his exciting. The paparazzi does exactly that. Their lives are so mundane and boring, they have to fill it with the woes of others.

Tom Joad only asked for a lift. The trucker asked for personal information in return. The paparazzi and media make a living prying and intruding into the lives of others. The trucker enriched his life with the misery of Tom Joad.

Civil War Essay

The Civil War was not just a man’s war. Even though women were thought of as inferior to men, they played a major role in the Civil War. In order to understand a woman’s power in the Civil War, you need to look at what a woman did. Women would disguise as men to fight in combat, they took over jobs that men normally held, and they worked as nurses to heal the sick and the injured. Women were affected the most by the Civil War. It allowed them to prove their worth and fight for their rights. As men were the forefront of the war, women had to work extremely hard since they were not expected to be any help.
Women such as Frances Clayton and Loreta Vazquez disguised as men to fight the battles of the Civil War. Since women were not allowed to join the battles, they had to break certain rules and dressed as something they were not so they could join. Females were prohibited from joining the army based solely on the premise of their gender. Husbands and wives were separated, women being left home alone. With the thought of men dying for them, many women decided to take action and join the army. It is estimated that over four hundred women disguised as men to join the war. They would not let anyone think of them as needy women in distress. They proved their worth in the army by playing crucial roles for both the Union and Confederacy. Rose Greenhow was one of the most famous spies in the Civil War. She was considered a hero to the Confederacy for the information she received on the Union’s movement. It was a very dangerous job since at any time they could be caught. Still, women persisted and kept fighting. Without woman to play this role, things would have gone very differently and the war would have been even more difficult.
Since almost all men had been drafted into the war, women had to keep up production in factories and hold government positions. Women had to produce military items such as bullets and uniforms. They worked dangerous jobs in arsenal factories where many casualties occurred. They lost their lives trying to help the side of the army they supported. Unlike before the war, women held many important new jobs they did not have before. They made money in the mints, worked in post offices, and copied official documents. They took on responsibilities that were never done by women before.
Women, such as Clara Barton, served as nurses in the Civil War. They provided medical care to the wounded and sick soldiers. No matter what gruesome or horrible scene they had to face, they continued to work to save the lives of all soldiers. Sally Tompkins was the only woman to be named an officer in the Confederate army due to her treatment of over 1,300 wounded men. Although men had a lot of prejudice against the women as nurses, women continued to work extremely hard to overcome these unfair ideas that women could not handle the war. Men thought women could not take on this responsibility because they would be too emotional. They fought against sexism to ensure that all soldiers in need were cared for. Even African American women such as Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth helped their cause by working as nurses in the Union. They would bring back wounded soldiers from the battlefield and bring them to hospitals. Since most fighting took place on Confederate soil, women in the south had to turn their homes into makeshift hospitals. They took care of soldiers, sometimes haunted by the death and suffering they saw. The women were greatly affected by the bloody warfare they witnessed, but continued working hard anyway. They tried to overcome a stereotype that working in the war was unladylike. Even if men still thought less of them, they continued to save their lives.
Victory relied not only on the men that fought in the war, but on those that served to support the war and the soldiers fighting in it. Women made sure they did everything they could for the sake of winning the war. Time after time, they proved a valuable asset to both sides of the divided country. They did the duties that could not be taken care of since men had left for war. From making bullets and uniforms, serving as nurses to heal those wounded in the battlefield, and joining the army to fight for their selves, the war became a forefront for women’s rights. They proved that they could fight and work for themselves, that they were not dependent on men. For many, this was the first time they had been on their own, without a man and with the power to do what they wanted. Whether they served on the Union or Confederacy, women all across the divided country were united in the same quest, to bring forth unity for the country, regardless of gender.

Service Learning: Is It Really Working?


Once a month, you sit in a classroom with your service-learning group. You probably discuss ideas, talk about fundraising, and try to make a difference for whatever cause you are working on. Has your group accomplished any goals you have set forth?

One of the main goals of CHS is to promote citizenship. One way we do this is our service learning requirements. Every student in Constitution High School is in a service-learning group and required to serve fifteen hours in their group. The idea of these groups is that each student can make a difference. However, this has not always been the case. We all have certain goals we would like to accomplish, but have we met them? Is service learning working?

Some students at Constitution High School work really hard with their service learning groups. They get things done and earn their hours. They feel good about what they are doing. However, some students feel as if nothing is getting accomplished. Some people say that members of their group do not even want to be there, or they see it as a free period. Jillian McDonnell, a sophomore, said, “I feel as though some students would rather be somewhere else. That’s fine, but they shouldn’t waste their time and their group’s time by being there. They should join the group that they will be most help to.” Tabitha Brown, a tenth grade student, said, “It seems like everything falls on the group leader. Other students never want to do anything, they never get involved. I think they don’t care too much about the group they are in.”

There are still other problems, like one anonymous junior pointed out. “Where’s the money from the bake sale going? We see the progress, but no end result.” People see a lot of good ideas, but sometimes, with the lack of resources or time, goals seem to get lost in the midst of everything else.

So what’s the verdict? What has been accomplished? During a discussion at lunch, I had a few ideas thrown at me for improvements on service learning. The one I heard the most was more meetings. Jillian McDonnell said, “ I think we should meet more often. When we meet once a month, students forget what they still have to do.”

The Season of My Life

"The seasons are calling, your pictures are falling down. And it happens once again, I'll turn to a friend, someone that understands, sees through the master plan. Everyone is gone, and I've been here for too long to face this on my own. Well I guess this is growing up." Growing up was the scariest thing to do. Puberty hit at the age of ten and things have never been the same. A conscience started to develop and I no longer had fun terrorizing the neighbors' pets. I still have a playful nature, but it is not carefree like when I was younger. My responsibilities have changed over the course of time and I have learned to except them. Summer is the season of my life.

As a young child, I could do anything without feeling guilt or sympathy. Now, I need to apologize when I bump on the bus. When a friend's family member dies, I give them my sincere condolences. Guilt overcomes me when I cheat or do something wrong, like Lizabeth felt after taunting Miss Lottie in the story "Marigolds". One time, in seventh grade, I felt so horrible after cheating on a math quiz, I had to tell my teacher. He made me retake the quiz to get my points and I faced no penalty due to my honesty.

Even though I find myself in the summer of my life, I am still a playful person. Going to concerts and hanging out with friends are what I do for fun. I have even rocked out at more concerts than both my parents! Playgrounds and amusement parks are the greatest places in the world. Last summer, I went to Disney World for the first time in my life and went on every single ride. Having fun is what keeps me in the summer rather than the autumn.

Responsibility plays a key role in growing up. During my lifetime, I had to become a responsible young adult. After turning sixteen, I acquired my first real job. Now I am able to pay for my own things instead of asking daddy. The scariest, yet most fun part about taking responsibility is looking into colleges. It is like I have my whole life to plan out and it takes a lot of responsibility. Learning how to be responsible pushed me into the summer of my life.

My life has had its ups and downs. I have grown up so much in the past few years and it has led to the summer of my lifetime. Jiminy Cricket showed up to tell me what is wrong and what is right. My playful nature matured and I have become more responsible. Growing up has been a rough ride, but now that I am in the summer, there is no going back. I am ready to keep moving on in my life.
